Mr. Big was traveling south for the annual mating season. Humpback whales spend their summers in Alaska for food, and winters in Mexico or Hawaii to mate. This time Mr. Big planned to head down to Mexico. In the middle of his journey, he bumped into a Mr. Teeny, a young humpback whale that was a bit smaller in size – who was trying to escape from a killer whale.
According to the nature of humpback whales, they like to help their peers, thus Mr. Big intervened. He rescued the little one from danger. Mr. Teeny felt safe and asked to join the journey with him. They both decided to travel to Mexico for the mating season. The little one could sing beautifully, while the bigger one had a lot of strength. They planned to part ways after finding their own mates, and made an appointment to meet again afterward so they can travel back to Alaska together.
Along the way, they encountered many dangers; fishing vessels, tourist boats, sharks, cargo ships and all kinds of threats to marine life. The overfishing habit in some certain areas made food hard to find, and the Chemical-based oil spill from sunken wrecks made everything worse. Therefore, they both were starved on the returning trip to Alaska.
As time passed, Mr. Big got sick. He didn't know what's wrong with his body, but he felt really sick; his stomach hurt, and there wasn’t any food for him. He endured until he couldn't stand it anymore, and finally gave up on living. However, he made Mr. Teeny promises to continue living with all his might.
Mr. Big passed away from plastic wastes that accumulated in his body. After that, Mr. Teeny struggled to survive, and he succeeded. He was able to lead his fellow whales to migrate safely to the South Pole, discover new food sources, and continued living in that territory until the end of his life. He met Mr. Big again in the afterlife.
This novel presents the situations that happen in the sea; irresponsible fishing, harms from whale watching tours, general life of aquatic animals and all the obstacles that they have to face every day – through the vision of two humpback whales. Hoping that the journey you have with them will raise awareness of what humans have done to marine life and fellow creatures.
