ONANGKIU | Gellangui to BijaNagara From the pages of Sejarah Melayu comes the epic tale of Princess Onangkiu of Gellangui.

Her father, Raja Culin, ruled the southern lands in alliance with Raja Linggi Shah Johan of Gangga Nagara—until the conqueror Raja Syulan arrived from across the western seas, crushing Gangga Nagara in his quest for the gold-laden mountains of Bhumi Semenanjung.

Raja Culin had once been a wanderer, fleeing the wars of the north to settle in an uncharted southern estuary.

There, he married Onang Kinang, a woman of the land whose courage was legendary—she had stared down a tiger at fourteen to save a village girl.

Together, they built Gellangui, the "treasure trove," a kingdom rich in spices, metals, and fragrant woods.

Under Raja Culin’s stern but just rule and Onang Kinang’s grace, the realm flourished, drawing traders, warriors, and artisans.

But tragedy struck when Onangkiu was born—her arrival bathed in the glow of fireflies, her mother’s life slipping away with the dawn.
