The Age of Umbrage is a novel of class and privilege in the Philippines in the 1980s and 90s.
Guadalupe, a precocious teenager, has grown up in the house of one of the wealthiest families in the world—in the servants’ quarters with her mother, the cook.
The life of luxury is all she knows, but it’s not really her life.
Unhappy in school, invisible at home, she lives inside her head, in a world made of novels and movies.
Outside, Manila is in turmoil: protest rallies, revolution, attempted coups d’etat, and the Internet hasn’t even arrived yet.
When is Guada going to leave her imaginary shelter and borrowed privilege, and get a life?
